Language Arts

The English curriculum at All Saints' cultivates students’ scholar skills and a love of learning. Language arts skills are integrated across the curriculum with other courses such as history, science, and art history. The literature curriculum emphasizes critical thinking through the analysis of the five-story elements.

Formal writing skills are emphasized throughout the upper grades, and specific skills such as note-taking, the use of quotations, using parenthetical notations and citing sources in a formal bibliography are requirements of middle school research projects. The mechanics of writing (grammar and punctuation) is taught in conjunction with each writing assignment, and then reinforced and applied throughout the revision process.

  • Sixth Grade

    In sixth grade, the fundamental elements of the proper sentence, paragraph, and essay structure are emphasized. Focus is placed on each stage of the writing process with an emphasis on the organization of ideas through outlining as well as developing and supporting a thesis statement. The literature program focuses on student fluency, building vocabulary, and teaching strategies for improving reading comprehension.
     
  • Seventh Grade

    Formal essay writing remains a central component in seventh grade. Students work on developing and supporting a thesis statement and using precise language in formal as well as in creative writing. Through the core novels, the literature program teaches students to read actively and critically. Students are exposed to the life and works of Shakespeare in connection with the middle school’s annual Shakespeare production. John Steinbeck is also studied and students visit the Steinbeck Center and participate in the Steinbeck Young Writers competition.
     
  • Eighth Grade

    Throughout eighth grade, students focus on refining their formal writing, which is based on the five-paragraph essay format. Students continue to work on developing and supporting a thesis statement and citing specific examples from the text. Students also write creatively, including an original short story written in conjunction with the art history curriculum. Public speaking is also an important component of the eighth grade curriculum, which culminates with writing and delivering a graduation speech in the spring.
