Science Comes Alive Through Our Buddy Program

Learning truly came to life as our 2nd and 7th graders joined together for a cross-curricular, cross-grade exploration of science through our Buddy Program. With curiosity, collaboration, and plenty of excitement, students discovered how science connects across classrooms, ages, and subjects.

Our 7th graders proudly stepped into the role of “science teachers,” leading a hands-on lesson on the states of matter for their 2nd grade buddies. Together, they explored solids, liquids, gases, and even plasma, sparking thoughtful questions, teamwork, and lots of “wow!” moments. It was a wonderful example of leadership in action and the power of peer-to-peer learning.

The collaboration continued from the classroom to the garden and the science lab with a delicious experiment: making passionfruit ice cream using fruit grown in our own organic garden. With a shared focus on changes of matter, students investigated what happens when a liquid becomes a solid through mixing, combining, and plenty of enthusiastic shaking.

By placing cream, fresh passionfruit, and sugar into bags surrounded by salt and ice, students watched science transform before their eyes—and then enjoyed the sweet results together on a beautiful winter afternoon in Carmel Valley.

This experience beautifully highlighted how academics at ASDS are both cross-curricular and cross-grade, blending science, gardening, leadership, and community. It was hands-on, joyful learning at its very best—and proof that science has never tasted so good.
