ASDS Outreach: Class Projects
ECU
Toy Drive
During the first week of December, our youngest ASDS students
participate in a special toy collection for farm labor children.
The toys collected are distributed, along with Holiday Food Boxes
collected by the entire student body, to our community’s
farm labor families.
1st grade
Sock Drive
Each winter the 1st grade collects socks for their Outreach project.
This project is often done in conjunction with their 8th grade
big brothers and sisters. This sock drive is done in February
or March preferably, and usually lasts about 2 weeks. At the end
of the project the collected socks are divided, half go to homeless
men through the I-Help project at All Saints’ Church and
half go to farm labor families.
2nd grade
Warm Things
The 2nd grade’s big brothers and sisters (7th graders) serve
lunch to the homeless at Dorothy’s Kitchen in Salinas each
year. To complement this project, the 2nd graders collect warm
things (blankets, coats, towels, sweatshirts, gloves, hats etc.)
for the 7th graders to take with them to Dorothy’s Kitchen.
3rd grade
Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches
In past years this project has been done at the end of January;
just after our canned soup drive known as the “Souper Bowl”.
The 3rd grade makes approximately 100 sandwiches one morning after
chapel to take to Dorothy’s Kitchen with the collection
of canned soup.
4th grade
SPCA
The 4th grade collects things for the SPCA (blankets, towels,
pet food etc.). This project is usually done in the spring when
the class studies animals.
5th grade
Each year the 5th grade chooses a unique Outreach project to benefit
a nonprofit organization within our community.
6th grade
Carmel Valley Manor
Following a theme of Fellowship with the Elderly, the 6th grade
class will make monthly visits to Carmel Valley Manor. The students
devote one full class to making seasonal greeting cards, bookmarks,
or placemats for the infirmed residents of the Medical Center
unit. The entire 6th grade class, along with the Chaplain and Music
teacher, delivers the items and entertains the residents with
song. Close bonds have been formed as a result of these visits.
Easter Baskets
Colorful Easter baskets are made during the 6th grade Easter party
each year and given to Nancy Costello for delivery to our community’s
Farm Labor children.
7th grade
Dorothy’s Kitchen
Every spring the 7th Grade participates in an Outreach at Dorothy’s
Kitchen in Salinas. The purpose of the visit is to give our students
a brief, but meaningful, glimpse at the plight of people living
in extreme poverty, the homeless and those living in great despair
due to mental illness and addiction. Emphasis is placed on courtesy,
respect and caring as the students set up for lunch, help cook,
serve meals, and clean up the kitchen. This opportunity to serve
those in need has been an enriching experience for students in
previous years and by far their favorite outreach project during
their All Saints’ career.
8th grade
Service Hours
The 8th grade attends an All Saints’ Day School Grade Service
Day each September. The students visit one of three predetermined
venues to perform community service. As the 8th grade students
at All Saints’ Day School are required to complete 10 hours
of community service, the 8th Grade Service Day serves as a “kickoff”
to motivate, educate and assist the students to the possibilities
and rewards of serving our community. Community service hours
may be earned by working for non-profit organizations; participating
in community-organized beach, park, or street cleanup or beautification
projects; assisting in senior citizen centers; helping at preschools;
volunteering in classrooms; volunteering at community holiday
dinners; and participating in projects sponsored by the community.
